Reishi
Ganoderma lucidum
Calm, sleep, and immune positioning — preliminary overall evidence, moderate for immune-cell modulation.
What the evidence shows
Human evidence is preliminary overall, with moderate consistency for immune-cell modulation: several RCTs show reishi can shift immune-cell populations (NK cells, T-lymphocytes, cytokines). Clinical studies also suggest modest benefits for lower urinary tract symptoms in men, mild improvements in blood sugar and lipids, and reduced anxiety in some populations. The popular sleep claim rests more on tradition and animal data than solid human RCTs. Trials are small and heterogeneous.
NutraLabel summarizes published research for formulation planning only. We make no health, disease, or efficacy claims about finished products.
Active compounds
Beta-glucan polysaccharides (immune effects) and triterpenes/ganoderic acids (calming, anti-inflammatory effects in preclinical work)
Primary positioning angle: stress, sleep, immune modulation.
Format fit & formulation notes
Reishi is bitter — one of the more challenging mushrooms for palatable chocolate and gummies. Dual extract (hot water plus alcohol) best matches clinical preparations because water pulls polysaccharides and alcohol pulls triterpenes. We typically mask bitterness with flavor systems tuned to your brand, or position reishi in capsules where taste is less of a constraint. Premium dark chocolate can carry reishi when dose and extract type are matched to the format.
Typical dose range (as studied)
Trials documenting benefits have often used roughly 1.44–5.4 g/day of powder or equivalent dual-extract for 4–16 weeks. Use as a formulation reference, not a guarantee.
Cautions
Can have blood-thinning and blood-pressure-lowering effects — caution with anticoagulants and before surgery. Occasional digestive upset. Liver-related concerns have been reported with powdered reishi in rare cases.
Claims defensibility
Immune-modulation language is more defensible than sleep promises based on current human RCTs. Brands should avoid cardiovascular or disease-treatment claims unsupported by the cited evidence.
Adaptogen and immune-support positioning; 'traditionally used to support calm,' hedged and substantiated.
Sleep-disorder or insomnia treatment claims, anxiety-disorder treatment, and cardiovascular disease claims.

Questions, answered.
Why does reishi formulation matter for chocolate?
Reishi is inherently bitter. In chocolate, we balance extract type, dose, and flavor so the finished bar still reads as a treat — not a supplement chore. Dual extract is often preferred for triterpene content, which affects both positioning and taste.
What is a dual extract and when do you need it?
A dual extract uses both hot-water and alcohol extraction. Water pulls beta-glucan polysaccharides; alcohol pulls triterpenes. For reishi, dual extract aligns better with how clinical preparations are made — relevant when your brand positions on both immune and adaptogen angles.
Is reishi evidence strong enough for a sleep product?
Human RCT support for sleep specifically is limited. Immune-cell modulation has more consistent trial data. Brands launching a sleep-positioned reishi product should work with regulatory counsel on claim language.
Can NutraLabel formulate a private-label reishi product?
Yes — chocolate, gummies, or capsules under your brand. Tell us the mushroom, the format, and your positioning; we develop the formula and manufacture the finished product.
